Azelaic acid is an organic compound with the formula (CH2)7(CO2H)2. This saturated dicarboxylic acid exists as a white powder. It is found in wheat, rye, and barley. It is a precursor to diverse industrial products including polymers, plasticizers, as well as being a component of a number of hair and skin conditioners.

Azelaic acid is a skin disease prevention and treatment drug, mainly used for the treatment of acne, chloasma and skin melanin deposition. It is also an important organic synthesis intermediate, used in plastic, rubber and other industries for the synthesis of plasticizer, in the aviation oil for the synthesis of low temperature and high speed lubricating oil, electrolytic capacitor manufacturing and other aspects of the important applications. At present, the main production method is to prepare azelaic acid from unsaturated fatty acids such as oleic acid and corresponding triglycerides such as castor oil and cottonseed oil. The majority of azelanoic acid is used in the production of dioctyl azelanoate (DOZ) plasticizer, while other uses are as spices, lubricants, oils, and raw materials of polyamide resins. DOZ can also be used as a softener for synthetic rubber. The amount of azelaic acid used to produce DOZ in Japan accounts for about 70% of the total consumption of azelaic acid. Azelaic acid can be dehydrated through ammonia to produce Azelaic nitrile. Used for the production of plasticizer dioctyl azelanoate and spices, lubricating oil, oil, and polyamide resin raw materials. Used as a reagent and also in organic synthesis.
